Pump Troubleshooting

Q: My pump will not prime?

It could be a number of things. The water level may be too low. Check it out. If water level is normal, it may be that the skimmer door is stuck. You could also have a leak at the pump lid. Remove the lid, clean and lubricate the O-ring and re-seal. There could also be a leak at the suction side of the pump. Call for service.

Q: Why does my pump loose it’s prime? And why is the pump motor so noisy?

It could be a number of things. The water level may be too low. Check it out. If water level is normal, it may be that the skimmer door is stuck. You could also have a leak at the pump lid. Remove the lid, clean and lubricate the O-ring and re-seal. There could also be a leak at the suction side of the pump. Call for service.

Q: Why does my pump motor hum, but it will not start?

First, check position of the valves. Position them in normal operation position. Your bearings may also be worn out. For this, you will need to call for service and repairs.

Q: The pump motor will not start after shutdown. What could it be?

This could be a couple of things. You could have dirt in start winding of the motor, the pump impeller is malfunctioning or the motor is burnt out. For any of these you will need to call for service and repair.

Q: The pump motor stops while running and the switch is “on”. What could it be?

A circuit breaker could be tripped. Reset and check if tripping reoccurs. In addition, check the time clock. There could be dirt in the start winding of the motor or the motor could be burned out. For this you will need to call for service and repair.

Filter Troubleshooting

Q: Why is the filter pressure excessively high, but the pool circulation is slow?

The filter may need backwashing. If the backwash does not correct this problem the grids in the DE filter probably need cleaning and you need to call for service and repair.

Q: Why is the filter pressure excessively high but the circulation is normal?

The pressure gauge may be defective, call for repairs. If you are experiencing freezing temperatures, ice formation in the gauge may be giving a false reading.

Q: The filter pressure is normal or high but there is no pool circulation?

Check the position of the valves and make sure they are in normal operating positions. Also, the filter may need backwashing. If backwash does not correct problem the grids in the DE filter may need cleaning. Call for service and repair.

Q: There is low or no filter pressure and no pool circulation?

This could be a number of things. The water level may be too low or a skimmer door may be stuck. There may be a leak at the pump lid. If so, remove, clean and lubricate the “O” ring and re-seal. There may be a leak at the suction side of the pump or dirt in the start winding of he motor and requires a call for service or repairs. Finally, the pump may have lost its prime. See priming instructions on page 64 of your Hauk Operations Manual.

Q: The DE siphons to pool when the system is off?

Try to bleed air off after backwashing. It could also be an air leak within the re-circulation system. Check all seals or call for repairs. The water level may be too low or a skimmer door may be stuck. There may be a leak at the pump lid. If so, remove, clean and lubricate the “O” ring and re-seal.

Q: Why is the filter leaking water out of the backwash line?

The backwash “O”-rings need lubrication. Call for service and repair.

Q: The filter backwash level is difficult to move?

First, turn off the pump before attempting to move handle. If that doesn’t work, the back wash “O”-rings probably need lubrication. Call for service and repair.

Leak Troubleshooting

Q: Why do I have leaks at the pump?

It could be a leak at the pump lid. If so, remove, clean and lubricate the “O” ring and re-seal. If that doesn’t work, the pump seal may be leaking or the plumbing is leaking. Call for service and repair.

Q: I have a leak at the filter?

Try to tighten the air bleed valve. If this does not work the plumbing may be leaking, there could be a defective pressure gauge or the backwash “O”-rings need lubrication. Call for service and repair.

Q: I have a leak at the heater?

The plumbing may be leaking or an internal part is broken. Call for service and repair.

Q: Why are there air bubbles coming through the returns?

This could be a number of things. The water level may be too low or a skimmer door may be stuck. There may be a leak at the pump lid. If so, remove, clean and lubricate the “O” ring and re-seal. There could be a leak at the suction side of the pump and requires a call for service and repairs.

Spa Troubleshooting

Q: The spa drains when pool is in normal mode (on vs. off)?

Check the position of the valves and position them for normal operation. If this checks out, valve seals may be worn and need replacement or there is trash in the check valve. Call for service and repair.

Q: Why does the spa drain when the pool is in spa mode?

Check the position of the valves and position them for normal operation. If this checks out, valve seals may be worn and need replacement or there is trash in the check valve. Call for service and repair.

Q: The heater won’t come on but the motor is running?

First, check the position of the valves. Make sure they are positioned for normal operation. Next, check thermostat setting. Also, the skimmer basket or hair and lint basket may be dirty. Filter may need backwashing. If the back wash does not correct the problem the grids in the DE filter may need cleaning. Call for service.

Q: Why is the heater cycling excessively?

The skimmer basket, or hair and lint basket, may be dirty. Also, check thermostat setting. If these check out, the filter may need backwashing. If the backwash does not correct the problem, the grids in the DE filter may need cleaning or the switches may be malfunctioning, call for service.

Q: The heater will not heat to the desired temperature?

The skimmer basket, or hair and lint basket, may be dirty. Also, check thermostat setting. If these check out, the filter may need backwashing. If the backwash does not correct the problem, the grids in the DE filter may need cleaning or the switches may be malfunctioning, call for service.

There may be a plugged finger screen in the cleaner or the hose may be plugged or have a hole. Check it out. See if the cleaner hose has blown apart or if a wheel has fallen off. Additionally, the skimmer basket, or hair and lint basket, may be dirty. The pump impeller may be malfunctioning and you will need to call for service and repairs. Also, the filter may need backwashing. Make sure you bleed air off after backwashing. If the backwash does not correct the problem the grids in the DE filter may need cleaning. Call for service.

Q: Why is the pool cleaner not moving?

This could be a lot of things. Check the position of the valves and make sure they are in normal operating positions. Also, the water level may be too low or a skimmer door may be stuck. There could be a leak at the pump lid. Remove, clean and lubricate the “O”-ring and re-seal. It could be that the pump has lost its prime, see priming instructions on page 64 of your Hauk Operations Manual. The skimmer basket, or hair or lint basket, may be dirty. If all this checks out, there may be a leak at the suction side of the pump and you will need to call for service and repair. Additionally, the filter may require backwashing, if this does not correct the issue, grids in the DE filter may need cleaning and you should call for service.

Q: The pool cleaner is not cleaning properly?

There could be a leak at the pump lid. Remove, clean and lubricate the “O”-ring and re-seal. It could be that the pump has lost its prime, see priming instructions on page 64 of your Hauk Operations Manual. Also, the filter may need backwashing. Make sure you bleed air off after backwashing. If the backwash does not correct the problem the grids in the DE filter may need cleaning. Call for service. The unit may also need adjustment. Bring the cleaner in for service or call for repair.

Q: Why is the pool cleaner’s hose so tangled?

There could be a hole in the hose or the hose may be plugged. The hose length may be wrong, the unit may be running too slow or the water temperature may be too cold, which makes the hose stiff. Or, the unit may need adjustment. Bring it in for service or call for repair.

Light Troubleshooting

Q: Why does the light not work?

Check to see if a circuit breaker tripped. Reset and check if tripping reoccurs. Try and reset the GFCI switch.
