Step-by-step guides for additional pool equipment items
1. Turn-Off Power
Go to the pool breaker box or sub-control center/panel and turn off all breakers that go to your equipment. Even if the power is out, you still must turn off all pool breaker switches.
2. Pool Sweep Pump
Unscrew the drain plug located at the front lower portion of the plumbing, by turning it counter-clockwise.
3. Filter Pump (Same for Hayward brand pump)
Filter pump has two (2) drain plugs with thumb knobs at the lower portion of the pump. Unscrew the drain plugs by turning counter-clockwise.
Remove the pump lid at the top of the pump by turning the lid counter-clockwise then removing the basket.
Put all drain plugs inside the basket and place in a secure location.
4. Chlorinator(s)
Remove the top lid by turning counter-clockwise.
Multi-port Backwash Valve must be turned slightly 90 degrees to partially open all 3 ports. If you have a Slide valve then you must turn counter-clockwise to unlock and then raise it halfway.
5. Filter Pump Cartridge Assembly
The air relief is at the top on the opposite side of the air pressure gauge. The air relief needs to be turned counter-clockwise for at least 3 turns to allow air into the filter.
Remove the bottom 4” drain cap at the bottom and also place it in the pump basket.
6. Spas Elevated from The Pool Level
With elevated spas, you have the check valve at the bottom portion of the Spa Return pipe. Remove the 8 small screws with a Phillip’s screwdriver and remove the cap. Note: the spa will drain its water to the point of the pool water level.
Spa return valves need to be partially open 90 degrees.
7. Heater (Same for older system Raypak brand heater)
At the lowest point of the heater on the plumbing side, will be a drain plug that will need to be turned counter-clockwise to remove.
1. Skimmer(s)
Fill an empty 1-gallon milk jug with water halfway and screw the top back on. Remove the skimmer baskets and replace them with the milk jug that now has half water.
2. Water
- Break any ice that accumulates on the surface of your pool using a plastic shovel or pole.
- Ensure to stay away from and do not touch the walls or floor of your pool or it will cause damage to your plaster and/or tile.
3. In-floor Cleaning Systems
- Leaf Trap – Open the lid by turning it clockwise in order to remove.
- Water Valve – Remove the v-clamp nut by turning counter clockwise until the clamp is loose enough.

1. Fusion-Type Chlorinator
- Remove the thumb knob plug at the bottom.
- Unscrew both lids at the top by turning counter-clockwise and removing the cartridge.
2. IG-Vessel Fusion Chlorinator
- Use a 7/16” wrench to remove the drain plug located at the bottom of the Chlorinator.
- Remove the lid by turning the large wheel counter clockwise which removes the cap, then remove the cartridge.
3. Pentair Filter Pump Cartridge Assembly
- 2” black drain plugs at the bottom under the inlets of the plumbing. Turning clockwise to unscrew the plug and remove.
4. Raypak Heater
- Newer systems will have a Protek Shield Assembly directly underneath the inlet connection pipe. You will have to unscrew the butterfly screw by turning counter-clockwise then remove the connecting wire. Then turn the zinc assembly cylinder counter-clockwise and remove.
- The second drain plug will be in the center on the opposite side of the inlet/outlet plumbing. You will need to remove the metal hole cover that can be popped off with a flathead screwdriver. The yellow drain plug for the return header needs to be turned counter clockwise to remove.
- The recommendation is to cover all pool equipment on the equipment pad with blankets and/or a tarp to further provide protection.
- Important: all of the steps above must be completed in their entirety prior to this step or damage may occur.
- Ensure to put all drain plugs and lids/caps in a secure location to be easily reinstalled using the instructions.
